Bernie Sanders has maintained throughout his presidential campaign that the killing of unborn babies in abortions is a “constitutional right.”
The Vermont senator, who describes himself as a democratic socialist, is ahead in the polls. Newsweek reports Sanders is the front-runner in the new polls, ahead of Joe Biden and Elizabeth Warren, as the Nevada and California primary elections approach.
But his abortion views are radical and extremely out of touch with most voters. During one of the first Democratic presidential debates, Sanders firmly supported abortion on demand by calling it a “constitutional right.”
Then, earlier this month, when asked if he believes there are pro-life Democrats, Sanders replied, “Being pro-choice is an absolutely essential part of being a Democrat,” CNS News reports.
Sanders has a long voting record in support of unlimited abortions up to birth. In January 2018, he voted against a bill to ban late-term abortions — a bill that would have saved as many as 18,000 unborn babies from abortions every year. The Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act would have banned abortions after 20 weeks when unborn babies are capable of feeling intense pain.
The U.S. Senate is scheduled to vote again on the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act next week, and Sanders is expected to vote against it. He also likely will oppose a second pro-life bill to protect newborn babies who survive abortions from infanticide. Sanders voted against a similar bill to protect babies from infanticide in 2019.

If elected to the White House, his abortion advocacy would continue. Sanders’ plan for Medicare for All would ensure an unlimited right to taxpayer-funded abortions, forcing Americans to fund the killing of unborn babies.
“We will pass — well, first of all, let me tell you this. It didn’t come up here, but let’s face this, Medicare for All guarantees every woman in this country the right to have an abortion if she wants it,” Sanders said during a June debate.
Though all the top Democrat candidates support unrestricted taxpayer-funded abortions up to birth, Sanders’ views on abortion are perhaps the most radical of all. In September during the CNN climate town hall, Sanders went further by arguing for more abortions as a population control measure.
An audience member told Sanders that “the planet cannot sustain this growth” and “empowering women and educating everyone” on curbing the population seems “reasonable.” Sanders answered that he supports women being able to “control their own bodies” and have abortions.
“The answer is yes and the answer has everything to do with the fact that women, in the United States of America, by the way, have a right to control their own bodies and make reproductive decisions,” he said.
In April, he also tried to justify his position allowing unborn babies to be aborted for any reason up to birth. Sanders told the Fox News town hall that late-term abortions are “okay” because they are “rare.”
Polls consistently show that most Americans, including a large number of Democrats, do not support such extremes. A recent Gallup poll found that 59% of Democrats want at least some restrictions on abortion and 29% identify as pro-life.
Another recent poll by Marist found that six in 10 Americans (62%) say that if the Supreme Court revisits Roe v. Wade it should allow states to determine restrictions (46%) or make abortion illegal (16%). Only 33% of Americans say Roe should be interpreted to allow for legal abortion any time without restriction.
